Animal Rescue - Does this show how a society has compassion?

Throughout my career as a social worker, I heard that a society is judged by how it treats its elderly and young. But what about animals?

I recently heard of a group that rescues horses that have been used (and abused) by drug traffickers. I was so impressed by the work of this group that it helped me see the positive in our current society. And, I made a donation to help their work.

The New York Times described the abuse of these noble animals...  Found tottering alone in the desert with their ribs visible and their heads hung low, horses play a backbreaking, unappreciated role in the multibillion-dollar drug smuggling industry.

But I was heartened to hear about the rescue efforts of Heart of Tucson. I now have a bit more faith in our society. Some people care for horses. If you care too, consider a donation to Heart of Tucson. I once lived in the Arizona desert and know how tough it can be for people and animals.
